FluxBB is a fork of PunBB created by its developers after Andersson left the project in April 2008. In 2007, PunBB was sold to a commercial company. Development continued under the direction of Rickard until April 2008. At that time, Rickard announced he would be ceasing his active involvement with the project.

PunBB – a fast and lightweight PHP-powered discussion board. It is released under the GNU General Public License. Its primary goals are to be faster, smaller and less graphically intensive as compared to other discussion boards. PunBB has fewer features than many other discussion boards, but is generally faster and outputs smaller, semantically correct XHTML-compliant pages.

PunBB is written in PHP and thus requires the PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor. PunBB also requires a database for storing forum data. For that purpose PunBB supports MySQL, PostgreSQL and SQLite.

PunBB was founded by Rickard Andersson, who conceived it as an alternative to over-featured or too graphic discussion boards. The first stable release was reached on the 7th of August, 2003.

Discuz! – a software for building an internet forum, written in PHP and developed by Comsenz Technology Co., Ltd. The application supports MySQL and PostgreSQL databases. This is the most popular internet forum application used in China.

Discuz! is free for personal use, a commercial license allows for paid usege which cost is around 3000 RMB. The software is officially available in Chinese. It was also officially developed in English, but development was interrupted for financial reasons. Unofficial English and other language versions are available on some web sites.

Discuz! was created and based on another internet application called “Asia XMB” (XMB forum) by Dai Zhikang as “Crossday Bulletin (CDB)” in March 2002. In October 15 it was renamed to “Discuz!”, and in February 2003 Comsenz Technology Co. Ltd. was founded.

A free and commercial version has been available since June 2003. Version 6.1.0 of the software depends on existing UCenter installation, which is an interface that connects all Comsenz products to a website. This is user management software, so information such as private messages can be used on all Comsenz products on the same page. Another innovation is integration of Chinese marketing service provider Insenz.

Comsenz was acquired by Tencent in August 2010.
Discuz! X 1.0 was developed in 2010, combining it with: other SNSs, web portals, groups and open platforms produced by the company.

Discourse – an open source discussion platform built for the next decade of the Internet. It can be used as a mailing list, discussion forum or long-form chat room.

Discourse breaks with existing schemes of present forum applications by including additional features that are available mainly for social networking applications. These features include, among others: scrolling, live updates, oneboxing, expandable links, and the ability to drag and drop attachments. Although these options are more social than technical, they improve the quality of online discussions through the extended database of forum applications.

The Discourse application is written in the JavaScript and Ruby on Rails programming language, requires the PostgreSQL database system and uses the Ember.js framework.

The application is (or was) used by companies and organizations such as: Atom (word processor), Boing Boing, CISCO, Docker, How-To Geek, Mozilla, Open Knowledge, SitePoint Forums, TalkSurf, The Daily WTF, Twitter, Ubuntu.

The project founders in 2013 were: Jeff Atwood, Robin Ward and Sam Saffron
